"CLOVIS"

My husband and I adopted Clovis, a Vizsla, when he was 8 weeks old. He was a cute little red ball of
energy. We have always had dogs and have always spoiled them but never had any difficulty with them.
Clovis was a bit of a surprise to us. We had expected and could deal with the high energy and with
typical puppy pranks. There seemed to be something else going on with him though. He challenged us from
day one, this tiny little 10 pound fellow. He would suddenly attack us and bite for no apparent reason.
We took him to a puppy obedience class and then a follow-up class. In addition, we had private sessions
several times. We were planning to show him, but he would become so excited around other dogs and people
that we had to delay starting show classes. He was not mean to or afraid of other people or dogs. He
was just very happy and excited to see them. Yet he seemed angry with us a lot. When he was about a
year old, we learned about John and Two Bears. That was the beginning of a solution to our problems.
Clovis is a very smart fellow and more aware of his environment than any dog I have ever known. For
instance, he would see a tiny spider on the ceiling and get frantic barking at it. On walks, he was
frightened by things like trash bags attached to a fence post. John taught us how to get him to calm
down. He learned to come to us when called. Since he is a hunting dog, this was especially important.
We progressed from use of a pinch collar to use of an e-collar. We taught him to go to place on command
and to have 15 minute time-outs. We learned how to react to him and how to stay calm and teach him what
we expected. Now at two years old, he is a very active fellow, participating in dog shows and hunt dog
tests. He has also bonded so well, and loves to sit in my lap and cuddle. We can’t say enough about how
helpful John was in getting us going in the right direction to having a wonderful pet.
