Beau was my first dog, a 10-week old puppy when I picked him up from
the breeder in 2004, and by sheer good luck, the perfect puppy for what I
wanted. I really didn’t know how to train a dog, let alone a powerful, drivey
Malinois, and because he was a civilized and sweet home companion, and
because we competed with great success in conformation, I’d no idea of
how much foundational work was lacking. But agility presented problems –
his unwillingness to collect in a competitive environment led to his barking
and jumping at me; his start line stay disappeared; his focus on me was
erratic. More significantly, in the small, contained environments typical of
AKC Obedience venues, he was unreliable.
I began training with John in December 2009, and the benefits were
immediately noticeable. Today, Beau has become a different dog and I
a better handler than I ever thought possible. Patience, gentle firmness,
lack of contention or conflict between me and my dog, plus layering on
basic foundational skills that were lacking, have led to my dog becoming
magnitudes more responsive, focused and reliable. We still have some
things to iron out, but I’ve no doubt they will be. I’ve also no doubt that my
first stop after bringing home my next puppy will be at Two Bears Dog Training. This truly
is training with a difference – and training that makes a difference!
